There are certain conditions upon which we may expect that God will hear & answer our prayers. One of the first of these is that we feel our need of help from Him. Those who hunger & thirst after righteousness, who long after God, may be sure that they will be filled. The heart must be open to the Spirit’s influence, or God’s blessing cannot be received.
Our great need is itself an argument & pleads most eloquently in our behalf. But the Lord is to be sought unto to do these things for us.
When all known wrongs are righted, we may believe that God will answer our petitions.
If we take counsel with our doubts & fears, or try to solve everything that we cannot see clearly, before we have faith, perplexities will only increase & deepen. But if we come to God, feeling helpless & dependent, as we really are, & in humble, trusting faith make known our wants to Him whose knowledge is infinite, who sees everything in creation, & who governs everything by His will & word, He can & will attend to our cry, & will let light shine into our hearts. Through sincere prayer we are brought into connection with the mind of the Infinite. We may have no remarkable evidence at the time that the face of our Redeemer is bending over us in compassion & love, but this is even so. We may not feel His visible touch, but His hand is upon us in love & pitying tenderness.
If the loving-kindness of God called forth more thanksgiving & praise, we would have far more power in prayer. We would abound more & more in the love of God & have more bestowed to praise Him for. You who complain that God does not hear your prayers, change your present order & mingle praise with your petitions. When you consider His goodness & mercies you will find that He will consider your wants. Pr 101-104

God wants His children to ask for those things that will enable Him to reveal His grace through them to the world. He wants them to seek His counsel, to acknowledge His power. Christ lays loving claims on all for whom He has given His life; they are to obey His will if they would share the joys that He has prepared for all who reflect His character here. The Lord has had true-hearted men & women, those who have made a covenant with Him by sacrifice. They have not swerved from their integrity. They have kept themselves unspotted from the world, & they have been led by the Light of life to defeat the purposes of the wily foe. Will human beings now act their part in resisting the devil? If they will do this, he will surely flee from them. Angels, who will do for you what you cannot do for yourselves, are waiting for your cooperation. They are waiting for you to respond to the drawing of Christ. Draw nigh to God & to one another. By desire, by silent prayer, by resistance of satanic agencies, put your will on the side of God’s will. While you have one desire to resist the devil, & sincerely pray, Deliver me from temptation, you will have strength for your day. It is the work of the heavenly angels to come close to the tried, the tempted, the suffering ones. They labor long & untiringly to save the souls for whom Christ has died. And when souls appreciate their advantages, appreciate the heavenly assistance sent them, respond to the Holy Spirit’s working on their behalf; when they put their will on the side of Christ’s will, angels bear the tidings heavenward. When Christ ascended to heaven, the sense of His presence was still with His followers. It was a personal presence, full of love & light. Jesus, the Saviour, who had walked & talked & prayed with them, who had spoken hope & comfort to their hearts, had, while the message of peace was still upon His lips, been taken up from them into heaven, land the tones of His voice had come back to them, as the cloud of angels received Him—“Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” He had ascended to heaven in the form of humanity. They knew that He was before the throne of God, their Friend & Saviour still; that His sympathies were unchanged; that He was still identified with suffering humanity. He was presenting before God the merits of His own precious blood, showing His wounded hands & feet, in remembrance of the price He had paid for His redeemed. They knew that He had ascended to heaven to prepare places for them, & that He would come again & take them to Himself.
As they met together after the ascension they were eager to present their requests to the Father in the name of Jesus. In solemn awe they bowed in prayer, repeating the assurance “Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in My name, He will give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in My name: ask, & ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.” And He had further said, “It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send Him unto you.” Henceforth through the Spirit, Christ was to abide continually in the hearts of His children. Their union with Him was closer than when He was personally with them. The light, & love, & power of the indwelling Christ shone out through them, so that men, beholding, “marveled; & they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.”
All that Christ was to the disciples, He desires to be to His children today; for in that last prayer, with the little band of disciples gathered about Him, He said, “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on Me through their word.” SC 73-75
“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?” These gifts are freely given to us by God. Oh, how weak is our faith, that we do not avail ourselves of the rich, glorious promises of God! It is his nature to bestow his gifts upon us. All-wise & all-powerful, he will give liberally to all who ask in faith. He is more merciful, more tender, more patient & loving than any earthly parent. He draws us to him by endearing language, that we may have courage & confidence. We are won to him by the disclosure of the tender sympathy that flows from his heart of love. No human parent could plead as earnestly with an erring child as God pleads with us.
All things are possible to those that believe. No one coming to the Lord in sincerity of heart will be disappointed. How wonderful it is that we can pray effectually, that unworthy, erring mortals possess the power of offering their requests to God! What higher power can man require than this,—to be linked with the infinite God? Feeble, sinful man has the privilege of speaking to his Maker. We utter words that reach the throne of the Monarch of the universe. We pour out our heart’s desire in our closets. Then we go forth to walk with God as did Enoch.
We speak with Jesus Christ as we walk by the way, & he says, “I am at thy right hand.” We may walk in daily companionship with Christ. When we breathe out our desire, it may be inaudible to any human ear, but that word can not die away into silence, nor can it be lost, though the activities of business are going on. Nothing can drown the soul’s desire. It rises above the din of the street, above the noise of machinery, to the heavenly courts. It is God to whom we are speaking, & the prayer is heard. As we need food to sustain our physical strength, so do we need Christ, the Bread from heaven, to sustain spiritual life & impart strength to work the works of God. First, you are to watch. Watch, lest you should speak hastily, fretfully, & impatiently. Watch, lest pride should find a place in your heart.
Second, you are to pray. Jesus would not have enjoined this upon you, unless there was actual necessity for it. It is well known to Him that of yourself you cannot overcome the many temptations of the enemy, & the many snares laid for your feet. He has not left you alone to do this; but has provided a way that you can obtain help. Therefore He has bid you to pray.
To pray aright is to ask God in faith for the very things you need. Go to your chamber, or in some retired place, & ask your Father for Jesus’ sake to help you. There is power in that prayer that is sent up from a heart convinced of its own weakness, yet earnestly longing for that strength that comes of God.
Plead your case before God, through Jesus, until your soul can with confidence rely upon Him for strength, & you feel that you are not left to do the work of overcoming alone. God will help you. Angels will watch over you. But before you can expect this help, you must do what you can on your part. Watch & pray. FLB 224
Why is it that we do not receive more from Him who is the source of light & power? We expect too little....
We do not value as we should the power & efficacy of prayer. God desires us to come to Him in prayer…Then; pray without ceasing. The Lord who heard Daniel's prayer will hear yours if you will approach Him as Daniel did.
Let us live in close communion with God. The joy of the Christian arises from a sense of God's love & care for His children & the assurance that He will not leave them alone in their weakness. RH Mar. 24, 1904
Prayer is heard by God when it comes from a heart broken by a sense of unworthiness.

Think of Christ, the adored of angels, in the attitude of a suppliant. He was a mighty petitioner, seeking at the hands of the Father fresh supplies of grace, & coming forth invigorated & refreshed, to impart His lessons of assurance & hope. Look at His kneeling form, as in the moonlit hours He pours forth His soul to the Father. Behold the angels watching the earnest suppliant. His prayer rises to all heaven in our behalf....
The disciples often witnessed Christ kneeling in prayer, their hearts broken & humbled. As their Lord & Saviour arose from His knees, what did they read in His countenance & bearing? That He was braced for duty & prepared for trial. Prayer was a necessity of His humanity, & His petitions were often accompanied with strong crying & with agony of soul as He saw the necessities of His disciples, who, not understanding their own dangers, were often, under Satan's temptations, led away from duty into wrongdoing.
Who can tell the agony that He endures as He sees Satan playing the game of life for the souls of those who claim to be His disciples, & sees them yielding point after point, allowing the soul's defenses to be broken down? We can form no conception of the agony that He endures at this sight. One soul lost, one soul given up to Satan's power, means more to Him than the whole world...
Christ is represented as hunting, searching, for the sheep that was lost. It is His love that encircles us, bringing us back to the fold, giving us the privilege of sitting together with Him in heavenly places. HP 76
The Lord Jesus is your personal intercessor.... Repeat over & over many times through the day, “Jesus has died for me. He saw me in peril, exposed to destruction, & poured out His life to save me. He does not behold the soul as a trembling suppliant prostrate at His feet without pity, & He will not fail to raise me up.” He has become the advocate for man. He has lifted up those who believe in Him & placed a treasure house of blessing at their demand. … We may draw upon God every moment. As we turn to Him, He answers, “Here I am.”
Christ proclaims Himself our Intercessor….
The Father hears every prayer of His contrite children. The voice of supplication from the earth unites with the voice of our Intercessor, who pleads in heaven, whose voice the Father always hears. Let our prayers therefore continually ascend to God. … Christ has given us His name to use....
Jesus receives & welcomes you as His own friend. He loves you; …He says, “At that day ye shall ask in my name: & I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: for the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, & have believed that I came out from God.” He virtually says, Make use of My name, & it will be your passport to the heart of My Father, & to all the riches of His grace. We must not only pray in Christ's name, but by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. This explains what is meant when it is said that the Spirit “maketh intercession for us, with groanings which cannot be uttered.” Such prayer God delights to answer. Christ is ever sending messages to those who listen for His voice. On the night of the agony in Gethsemane, the sleeping disciples heard not the voice of Jesus. They had a dim sense of the angels’ presence, but lost the power & glory of the scene. Because of their drowsiness & stupor they failed of receiving the evidence that would have strengthened their souls for the terrible scenes before them. Thus today the very men who most need divine instruction often fail of receiving it, because they do not place themselves in communion with heaven.
The reason why so many are left to themselves in places of temptation is that they do not set the Lord always before them. When we permit our communion with God to be broken, our defense is departed from us. Not all your good purposes & good intentions will enable you to withstand evil. You must be men & women of prayer. Your petitions must not be faint, occasional, & fitful, but earnest, persevering, & constant. … Cultivate the habit of talking with the Saviour when you are alone, when you are walking, & when you are busy with your daily labor. Let the heart be continually uplifted in silent petition for help, for light, for strength, for knowledge. Let every breath be a prayer.
…All are pressed with urgent cares, burdens, & duties, but the more difficult your position & the heavier your burdens, the more you need Jesus.
The strength received through communion with God, united with earnest effort in training the mind to thoughtfulness & caretaking, prepares one for daily duties & keeps the spirit in peace under all circumstances, however trying.
When in trouble, many think they must appeal to some earthly friend, telling him their perplexities, & begging for help. Under trying circumstances unbelief fills their hearts, & the way seems dark. And all the time there stands beside them the mighty Counselor of the ages, inviting them to place their confidence in Him. Jesus, the great Burden Bearer, is saying, “Come unto Me, & I will give you rest.” Shall we turn from Him to uncertain human beings, who are as dependent upon God as we ourselves are?
You may feel the deficiency of your character & the smallness of your ability in comparison with the greatness of the work. But if you had the greatest intellect ever given to man, it would not be sufficient for your work. “Without Me ye can do nothing,” says our Lord & Saviour.
In your business, in companionship for leisure hours, & in alliance for life, let all the associations you form be entered upon with earnest, humble prayer. You will thus show that you honor God, & God will honor you. Pray when you are fainthearted. When you are desponding, close the lips firmly to men; do not shadow the path of others; but tell everything to Jesus. … Ask for humility, wisdom, courage, increase of faith, that you may see light in God’s light & rejoice in His love.
We must have less trust in what we ourselves can do, & more trust in what the Lord can do for & through us. You are not engaged in your own work; you are doing the work of God.
As you ask the Lord to help you, honor your Saviour by believing that you do receive His blessing. All power, all wisdom, are at our command. We have only to ask.
Walk continually in the light of God. Meditate day & night upon His character. Then you will see His beauty & rejoice in His goodness. Your heart will glow with a sense of His love. You will be uplifted as if borne by everlasting arms. With the power & light that God imparts, you can comprehend more & accomplish more than you ever before deemed possible. HDL 56-62
Our prayers are to be as earnest & persistent as was the petition of the needy friend who asked for the loaves at midnight. The more earnestly & steadfastly we ask, the closer will be our spiritual union with Christ. We shall receive increased blessings because we have increased faith.

Christ our Saviour was tempted in all points like as we are, yet he was without sin. He took human nature, being made in fashion as a man, & his necessities were the necessities of a man. He had bodily wants to be supplied, bodily weariness to be relieved. It was by prayer to his Father that he was braced for duty & for trial. Day by day he followed his round of duty, seeking to save souls. His heart went out in tender sympathy for the weary & heavy laden. And he spent whole nights in prayer in behalf of the tempted ones.
Christ has given his disciples assurance that special seasons for devotion are necessary. Prayer went before & sanctified every act of his ministry. He communed with his Father till the close of his life; …The night seasons of prayer which the Saviour spent in the mountain or in the desert were essential to prepare him for the trials he must meet in the days to follow. He felt the need of the refreshing & invigorating of soul & body, that he might meet the temptations of Satan; & those who are striving to live his life will feel this same need.
The Christian is given the invitation to carry his burdens to God in prayer, & to fasten himself closely to Christ by the cords of living faith. … Go forward, the Lord says; I understand the case, & I will send you help. Was it possible that one so righteous as himself needed any such spiritual work done for him? The startled hearer could only utter the words scarcely above a whisper, “How can these things be?” He had been praised & exalted by men, but Jesus tore away his self-righteousness by telling him that his whole conceptions were wrong. Neither his benevolence, his many good deeds, nor his exalted position as a teacher in Israel was sufficient to entitle him to heaven. He must be born again if he would see the kingdom of God. Then… dismiss the enemy. Tell him that you will not dishonor God by doubting His mercy, His goodness, His love. Never argue with Satan, for he has wonderful powers of deception. Many think that Jesus is a great way off, high in the heavens, & far from the sound of their prayers; but he says, “Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst.” When we assemble for religious service, we may be certain that Jesus is with us. However few & humble the worshipers may be, the heavenly Guest is there. Jesus does not want you to remain away from him in order that you may make yourself more worthy of his favor & blessing, for you cannot do this. The Lord has determined to take a people to Himself according to His own divine wisdom; not because they are imperfect & defective in character, but because through His grace He can correct their errors & remedy their mistakes…. This prayer holds out before us our possibilities, showing that it is possible for us to live in close communion with God.

The Lord Jesus loves His people, & when they put their trust in Him, depending wholly upon Him, He strengthens them. He will live through them, giving them the inspiration of His sanctifying Spirit, imparting to the soul a vital transfusion of Himself. Tell Jesus your wants in the sincerity of your soul. You are not required to hold a long controversy with, or preach a sermon to, God, but with a heart of sorrow for your sins, say, “Save me, Lord, or I perish.” There is hope for such souls. They will seek, they will ask, they will knock, & they will find. When Jesus has taken away the burden of sin that is crushing the soul, you will experience the blessedness of the peace of Christ. God’s goodness in hearing & answering prayer places us under heavy obligation to express our thanksgiving for the favors bestowed upon us. We should praise God much more than we do. The blessings received in answer to prayer should be promptly acknowledged. The record of them should be placed in our diary, that when we take the book in hand, we may remember the goodness of the Lord, & praise His holy name. RH May 7, 1908
He is not only the author, but the finisher of our faith. It is Christ first & last & always. He is to be with us, not only at the beginning & the end of our course, but at every step of the way.... FLB 125

Still he studies with a desire to become like his great Exemplar. He catches the looks, the spirit, of his beloved Master. By beholding, by “looking unto Jesus the author & finisher of our faith,” he becomes changed into the same image. It is not by looking away from him that we imitate the life of Jesus, but by talking of him, by dwelling upon his perfections, by seeking to refine the taste & elevate the character, by trying, through faith & love, & by earnest, persevering effort, to approach the perfect Pattern. By having a knowledge of Christ,—his words, his habits, & his lessons of instruction,—we borrow the virtues of the character we have so closely studied, & become imbued with the spirit we have so much admired. We have every reason to trust in God, & to bring all our worries & anxieties to Jesus Christ, that we may become better acquainted with Him. …“Take it to the Lord in prayer,” & then leave your perplexities & burdens with Him. …You may come to Him as a child comes to his parents, saying, “Here, Lord, I have carried my self as though I could save myself for a long time. My burdens are too heavy for me to carry longer. Thou canst bear them for me.” He says, “I will take them. With everlasting kindness will I have mercy upon thee.”
This love is [as] strong as it is tender. The love of Jesus is stronger than death, for He died to win your love, to have you lean upon Him fully & entirely, & to make you one with Him,…
His love is durable, without variableness or shadow of turning. Never let us dishonor God by trying so hard to keep ourselves, fixing our eyes upon ourselves, & keeping ourselves constantly in view.
Look unto Jesus who is the Author & Finisher of our faith. Let us not do as we have done, make ourselves miserable over some supposed future tomorrow's burden. Carry your duties of today cheerfully. Today's faith, today's trust in Jesus, we must have. Today I may look & live. Today I will put my trust in God. Today I will rest in quietude & peace kept by the power of God.
