Many are inquiring, “How am I to make the surrender of myself to God?” You desire to give yourself to Him, but you are weak in moral power, in slavery to doubt, & controlled by the habits of your life of sin. Your promises & resolutions are like ropes of sand. You cannot control your thoughts, your impulses, your affections. The knowledge of your broken promises & forfeited pledges weakens your confidence in your own sincerity, & causes you to feel that God cannot accept you; but you need not despair. What you need to understand is the true force of the will. This is the governing power in the nature of man, the power of decision, or of choice. Everything depends on the right action of the will. The power of choice God has given to men; it is theirs to exercise. You cannot change your heart, you cannot of yourself give to God its affections; but you can choose to serve Him. You can give Him your will; He will then work in you to will & to do according to His good pleasure. Thus your whole nature will be brought under the control of the Spirit of Christ; your affections will be centered upon Him, your thoughts will be in harmony with Him.
Desires for goodness & holiness are right as far as they go; but if you stop here, they will avail nothing. Many will be lost while hoping & desiring to be Christians. They do not come to the point of yielding the will to God. They do not now choose to be Christians.
Through the right exercise of the will, an entire change may be made in your life. By yielding up your will to Christ, you ally yourself with the power that is above all principalities & powers. You will have strength from above to hold you steadfast, & thus through constant surrender to God you will be enabled to live the new life, even the life of faith. SC 47-48

We obtain distinct views of His tenderness & compassion, & our hearts are broken & melted with contemplation of the love that is given to us. We feel indeed an abiding Christ in the soul. We abide in Him & feel at home with Jesus.
The promises flow into the soul. Our peace is like a river; wave after wave of glory rolls into the heart, & indeed we sup with Jesus & He with us. We have a realizing sense of the love of God, & we rest in His love. No language can describe it; it is beyond knowledge. We are one with Christ; our life is hid with Christ in God. We have the assurance that when He who is our life shall appear, then shall we also appear with Him in glory. With strong confidence, we can call God our Father.
Whether we live, or die, we are the Lord’s. His Spirit makes us like Jesus Christ in temper & disposition, & we represent Christ to others. When Christ is abiding in the soul, the fact cannot be hid, for He is like a well of water springing up into everlasting life. We can but represent the likeness of Christ in our character; & our words, our deportment, produces in others a deep, abiding, increasing love for Jesus, & we make manifest in word & deportment that we are conformed to the image of Jesus Christ. 9LtMs, Lt 52, 1894

…God assures us that He will not leave us to grope in uncertainty. He will not leave us to be our own teachers in the all-important matters that concern our eternal destiny. He declares: “I will be your Teacher. I will give you light & knowledge.” We gain nothing by gathering about us mist & cloud. The Lord desires us to be cheerful & joyful. Now if we had virtue & righteousness & strength to rely upon of our own, the promise & invitation would not be worded just as it is, but it shows us we must cast our entire care upon Jesus & hope & trust in Him & Him alone. There is help for us only in God. We should not flatter ourselves that we have any strength or wisdom of our own; for our strength is weakness, our judgment foolishness. Christ conquered the foe in our behalf, because he pitied our weakness & knew that we would be overcome & would perish if he did not come to our help. He clothed his divinity with humanity, & thus was qualified to reach man with his human arm, while with his divine arm he grasped the throne of the Infinite. RH Feb. 5, 1895

“Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.” We are prone to look to our fellow-men for sympathy & uplifting, instead of looking to Jesus. In His mercy & faithfulness, God often permits those in whom we place confidence to fail us, in order that we may learn the folly of trusting in man, & making flesh our arm. Let us trust fully, humbly, unselfishly, in God. He knows the sorrows that we feel to the depths of our being, but which we cannot express.
Study the history of Joseph & of Daniel. The Lord did not prevent the plottings of men who sought to do them harm; but He caused all these devices to work for good to His servants, who amid trial & conflict preserved their faith & loyalty.
So long as we are in the world, we shall meet with adverse influences. There will be provocations to test the temper; & it is by meeting these in a right spirit that the Christian graces are developed. If Christ dwells in us, we shall be patient, kind, & forbearing, cheerful amid frets & irritations. Day by day & year by year we shall conquer self, & grow into a noble heroism. This is our allotted task; but it cannot be accomplished without help from Jesus, resolute decision, unwavering purpose, continual watchfulness, & unceasing prayer. Each one has a personal battle to fight. Not even God can make our characters noble or our lives useful, unless we become co-workers with Him. Those who decline the struggle lose the strength & joy of victory.
If as workers for Christ you feel that you have had greater cares & trials than have fallen to the lot of others, remember that for you there is a peace unknown to those who shun these burdens. There is comfort & joy in the service of Christ. Let the world see that life with Him is no failure. GW 476-477

The revelation of Christ by the Spirit brought to them a realizing sense of His power & majesty, & they stretched forth their hands to Him by faith, saying, “I believe.”
Then the glad tidings of a risen Saviour were carried to the uttermost bounds of the inhabited world. The church beheld converts flocking to her from all directions. Believers were reconverted. Sinners united with Christians in seeking the pearl of great price. …Every Christian saw in his brother the divine similitude of benevolence & love. One interest prevailed. One object swallowed up all others. All hearts beat in harmony. The only ambition of the believers was to reveal the likeness of Christ's character, & to labor for the enlargement of His kingdom. …
These scenes are to be repeated, & with greater power. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost was the former rain, but the latter rain will be more abundant. COL 118

In the parable, when the king inquired, “How camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment?” the man was speechless. So it will be in the great judgment day. Men may now excuse their defects of character, but in that day they will offer no excuse.
There will be no future probation in which to prepare for eternity. It is in this life that we are to put on the robe of Christ’s righteousness. This is our only opportunity to form characters for the home which Christ has made ready for those who obey His commandments.
They would not surrender their own habits & character. They would not put off the garments of earth in order to be clothed with the robe of heaven. COL 317-319

There is hope for man. Christ says, “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, & am set down with my Father in his throne”. But let us never forget that the efforts we make in our own strength are utterly worthless. Our strength is weakness; our judgment foolishness. Only in the name & strength of our Conqueror can we conquer. When we are pressed with temptation, when un-christlike desires clamor for the mastery, let us offer fervent, importunate prayer to the heavenly Father, in the name of Christ. Remember that prayer is the source of your strength. A worker cannot gain success while he hurries through his prayers & rushes away to look after something that he fears may be neglected or forgotten. He gives only a few hurried thoughts to God; he does not take time to think, to pray, to wait upon the Lord for a renewal of physical & spiritual strength. He soon becomes weary. He does not feel the uplifting, inspiring influence of God’s Spirit. He is not quickened by fresh life. His jaded frame & tired brain are not soothed by personal contact with Christ.
…There are those who work all day & far into the night to do what seems to them must be done. The Lord looks pityingly upon these weary, heavy-laden burden bearers & says to them: “Come unto Me, ... & I will give you rest.”
Never let your courage fail. Never talk unbelief because appearances are against you. As you work for the Master you will feel pressure for want of means, but the Lord will hear & answer your petitions for help.
If you make a mistake, turn your defeat into victory. The lessons that God sends will always, if well learned, bring help in due time. Put your trust in God. Pray much, & believe. Trusting, hoping, believing, holding fast the hand of Infinite Power, you will be more than conquerors. 7T 242-244

If you see your sinfulness, do not wait to make yourself better. How many there are who think they are not good enough to come to Christ. Do you expect to become better through your own efforts? ...There is help for us only in God. We must not wait for stronger persuasions, for better opportunities, or for holier tempers. The true principles of Christianity open before all a source of happiness, the height & depth, the length & breadth of which are immeasurable. When the mind dwells upon self, it is turned away from Christ, the source of strength & life. Hence it is Satan’s constant effort to keep the attention diverted from the Saviour & thus prevent the union & communion of the soul with Christ. The pleasures of the world, life’s cares & perplexities & sorrows, the faults of others, or your own faults & imperfections—to any or all of these he will seek to divert the mind. Do not be misled by his devices. Many who are really conscientious, & who desire to live for God, he too often leads to dwell upon their own faults & weaknesses, & thus by separating them from Christ he hopes to gain the victory. We should not make self the center & indulge anxiety & fear as to whether we shall be saved. All this turns the soul away from the Source of our strength. Commit the keeping of your soul to God, & trust in Him. Talk & think of Jesus. Let self be lost in Him. Put away all doubt; dismiss your fears…. Rest in God. He is able to keep that which you have committed to Him. If you will leave yourself in His hands, He will bring you off more than conqueror through Him that has loved you. SC 71

Yield yourself to Christ without delay; He alone, by the power of His grace, can redeem you from ruin. He alone can bring your moral & mental powers into a state of health. T2 564

We should remember that all make mistakes; even men & women who have had years of experience sometimes err; but God does not cast them off because of their errors; to every erring son & daughter of Adam He gives the privilege of another trial. ST May 21, 1902

Jesus loves to have us come to Him just as we are, sinful, helpless, dependent. We may come with all our weakness, our folly, our sinfulness, & fall at His feet in penitence. It is His glory to encircle us in the arms of His love, & to bind up our wounds, to cleanse us from all impurity.
Here is where thousands fail: they do not believe that Jesus pardons them personally, individually. They do not take God at His word. It is the privilege of all who comply with the conditions to know for themselves that pardon is freely extended for every sin. Put away the suspicion that God's promises are not meant for you. They are for every repentant transgressor. Strength & grace have been provided through Christ to be brought by ministering angels to every believing soul. None are so sinful that they cannot find strength, purity, & righteousness in Jesus, who died for them.
Can you believe that when the poor sinner longs to return, longs to forsake his sins, the Lord sternly withholds him from coming to His feet in repentance? Away with such thoughts! Nothing can hurt your own soul more than to entertain such a conception of our heavenly Father....
Come with your whole heart to Jesus, & you may claim His blessing. SC 52-54

You may feel that you cannot meet the approval of heaven. You may say, “I was born with a natural tendency toward this evil, & I cannot overcome.” But every provision has been made by our heavenly Father whereby you may be able to overcome every unholy tendency. You are to overcome even as Christ overcame in your behalf. …It was sin that imperiled the human family; & before man was created the provision was made that if man failed to bear the test, Jesus would become his sacrifice & surety, that through faith in Him, man might be reconciled to God, for Christ was the Lamb “slain from the foundation of the world”. Christ died on Calvary that man might have power to overcome his natural tendencies to sin. But one says, “Can I not have my own way, & act myself?” No, you cannot have your way, & enter the kingdom of heaven. No “my way” will be there. No human ways will find place in the kingdom of heaven. Our ways must be lost in God’s ways. RH Feb 23, 1892

Through the power that Jesus gives, we can be “more than conquerors.” But we can not manufacture this power. Only through the Spirit of God can we receive it. We need a deep insight into the nature of Christ & into the mystery of his love, “which passeth knowledge.” We are to live in the warm, genial rays of the Sun of Righteousness. Nothing but Christ’s loving compassion, his divine grace, his almighty power, can enable us to baffle the relentless foe, & subdue the opposition of our own hearts. What is our strength?—The joy of the Lord. Let the love of Christ fill our hearts, & then we shall be prepared to receive the power that he has for us. RH Mar. 31, 1904

This example is given us that we may know the heights we may reach in & through Christ. The standard He presents is perfection, & through His merits we may attain to this. We come short because we are content to look at earthly things rather than at heavenly.
What others may do, what others may say, what others may think of you, will not change God’s thoughts toward you. He that doeth righteousness is righteous, & the opinion of men will not change His character.
We have no excuse for remaining in spiritual weakness & poverty. …Every provision has been made, & it rests wholly with us whether we will believe the words of God.
We must have a knowledge of God by living experience….But we can do this only by learning of Jesus, cherishing His meekness & lowliness of heart. Let us hide ourselves in God. Let us have confidence in Him. Let us abide in Christ. Then we all “with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory,”—from character to character. God does not expect impossibilities from you or me. Beholding Him, we may be changed into His image.
God says you may govern yourself. He has provided the aid of the Holy Spirit, that you may put on Christ, & build up a pure, beautiful structure, in which God can delight. Sit in serious, earnest judgment on your defects. Look to Jesus. He gave His life a sacrifice for your sins, that He might present you pure & spotless before the heavenly universe. ST Apr. 25, 1900

The fall of man filled all heaven with sorrow, & the heart of Jesus was moved with infinite compassion for the lost world, the ruined race. He beheld man plunged in sin & misery, & knew that he had not moral power to overcome in his own behalf the power of his unsleeping enemy. In divine love & pity He came to earth to fight our battles for us; for He alone could conquer the adversary. He came to unite man with God, to impart divine strength to the repenting soul, & from the manger to Calvary to pass over the path which man would travel, at every step giving man a perfect example of what he should do, presenting in His character what humanity might become when united with divinity.
But many say that Jesus was not like us, that He was not as we are in the world, that He was divine, & therefore we cannot overcome as He overcame. But this is not true.… Christ knows the sinner’s trials; He knows his temptations. He took upon Himself our nature; He was tempted in all points like as we are. He has wept, He was a man of sorrows, & acquainted with grief. As a man He lived upon earth. As a man He ascended to heaven. As a man He is the substitute of humanity. As a man He liveth to make intercession for us. As a man He will come again with kingly power & glory to receive those who love Him, & for whom He is now preparing a place. BEcho Nov. 1, 1892

Through the indulgence of sin, many have forfeited the favor of God, misrepresented Jesus, forgotten his presence, forgotten that they are living in his sight, & so have added evil to evil. All such are foolish virgins. They have no abiding consolation. The power of Christ is to be the comfort, the hope, the crown of rejoicing, of every one that follows Jesus in his conflict, in his struggles in life. He who truly follows the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world, can shout as he advances, “This is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.”
What kind of faith is it that overcomes the world?—It is that faith which makes Christ your own personal Saviour,—that faith which, recognizing your helplessness, your utter inability to save yourself, takes hold of the Helper who is mighty to save, as your only hope. It is faith that will not be discouraged, that hears the voice of Christ saying, “Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world, & my divine strength is yours.” It is the faith that hears him say, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” RH Aug. 26, 1890

We are soldiers of Christ on the field of battle, & we cannot expect to have an easy time. We must obey the orders of our Captain. He is leading His army on to victory. All that we have to do is to keep close watch of Him, & obey His orders, & we shall be successful in fighting the battles of the Lord.
When difficulties arise, as they will, remember that Jesus is by your side, a very present help in time of need. To meet trial bravely is part of the Christian warfare, & in this warfare all heaven is interested. Christ knows what temptations you will meet. He knows that when one accepts the truth, he will have a cross to lift, & He is ready to give the needed help. 4LtMs, Ms 8, 1885

It means much to be an overcomer. The besetments of the enemy & all his evil agencies must be firmly resisted. Every moment we must be on guard. Not for one instant are we to lose sight of Christ, & of His power to save in the hour of trial. Our hand must be placed in His, that we may be upheld by the power of His might. RH Jul. 9, 1908

Nothing can be more helpless & yet more invincible than the soul that feel its nothingness, & relies wholly upon the merits of a crucified & risen Saviour. The Christian will feel the promptings of sin, but he will maintain a constant warfare against it. Here is where Christ's help is needed. Human weakness becomes united to divine strength, & faith exclaims: “Thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” GC 469

One thing I wish to impress upon your minds. You have the special mediums of Satan closely connected with you, & their power & influence have a manifest effect upon you, because you do not remain near enough to God to ensure the special aid of angels that excel in strength. 2T 171

If Satan can so befog & deceive the human mind, & lead mortals to think there is an inherent power in themselves to accomplish great & good works, they cease to rely upon God to do that for them which they think exists in themselves to do. They acknowledge not a superior power. They give not God the glory he claims, & which is due to his great & excellent Majesty. Satan’s object is thus accomplished. He exults that fallen man presumptuously exalts himself, as he exalted himself in heaven, & was thrust out. He knows that the ruin of man is just as sure if he exalts himself as his was certain. He has failed in his temptations to Christ in the wilderness. The plan of salvation has been carried out. The dear price has been paid for man’s redemption. And now Satan seeks to tear away the foundation of the Christian’s hope, & turn the minds of men in a channel that they may not be benefited or saved by the great sacrifice offered. He leads fallen man, through his “all deceivableness of unrighteousness,” to believe that he can do very well without an atonement; that he need not depend upon a crucified & risen Saviour; that man’s own merits will entitle him to God’s favor, & then he destroys man’s confidence in the Bible, well knowing if he succeeds here, & the detector which places a mark upon himself is destroyed, he is safe. And he fastens the delusion upon minds that there is no personal Devil, & those who believe this make no effort to resist & war against that which does not exist, & poor blind mortals finally adopt the maxim—“Whatever is is right.” They acknowledge no rule to measure their course. Satan leads many to believe that prayer to God is useless, & but a form. He well knows how needful is meditation & prayer, to keep Christ’s followers aroused to resist his cunning & deceptions. Satan’s devices will divert the mind from these important exercises, that the soul may not lean for help upon the mighty One, & obtain strength from him to resist his attacks. RH Feb. 18, 1862

But his most successful scheme in deceiving man has been to conceal his real purposes, & his true character, by representing himself as man’s friend & a benefactor of the race. He flatters men with the pleasing fable that there is no rebellious foe, no deadly enemy that they need to guard against, & that the existence of a personal devil is all a fiction. While he thus hides his existence, he is gathering thousands under his control. He is deceiving them, as he tried to deceive Christ, that he is an angel from Heaven doing a good work for humanity. And the masses are so blinded by sin that they cannot discern the devices of Satan, & they honor him as they would a heavenly angel, while he is working their eternal ruin. RH Jul. 28, 1874

The work is before you to improve the remnant of your life in reforming & elevating the character. A new life begins in the renewed soul. Christ is the indwelling Saviour. That which may be regarded as hard to give up must be yielded. The overbearing, dictatorial word must be left unspoken; then a precious victory will be gained. T4 345

We make failures in our little, daily difficulties, & allow them to irritate & vex us; we fall under them, & so make stumbling blocks for ourselves & others. But blessings of the greatest importance are to result from the patient endurance of these daily vexations; for we are to gain strength to bear greater difficulties.
